A Rooted Community: Rootstown, Ohio—More Than Just a Crossroads
You know we spend a lot of time on Ohio rooftops, all over Portage County. We see the history, the hard work, and the unique blend of rural and suburban life that defines this area. Today, we’re zooming in on a place that truly lives up to its name: Rootstown Township.
If you call Rootstown home, you already appreciate the country setting, the great schools, and the easy access to major highways. But the history that built this town, and the homes that stand as a testament to that history, are worth digging into.
The Founding of Rootstown: The Western Reserve's Legacy
Rootstown’s story begins with the founding of the Connecticut Western Reserve. Back in the late 1700s and early 1800s, this entire region was settled largely by people moving west from New England, and our township is a perfect example of that migration. The township is named after one of the original proprietors, Ephraim Root, a lawyer and investor with the Connecticut Land Company.
The first settler, Ephraim’s brother David Root, arrived in 1802. It’s hard to imagine what this area looked like then: dense forest, log cabins, and the immense task of clearing land for agriculture. Rootstown was formally organized as a civil township in 1810, and agriculture was the main industry for well over a century. We’re talking dairy farms, orchards, and grain crops—the backbone of the economy.
A unique chapter in Rootstown’s history took place around 1850 when a group of sixteen retired whaling sea captains from Nantucket decided to trade their ships for soil. They bought land and built large homes here, shifting their focus from the sea to farming. That’s a truly distinctive migration story that left an imprint on the area’s culture and architecture. While the captains are long gone, their dedication to hard work and building quality structures is a lasting part of Rootstown’s DNA.
Rootstown’s Architecture: New England Roots and Farmhouse Charm
When we pull up to a home in Rootstown for a roof inspection, we’re not just looking at shingles; we’re seeing the layers of history built into the structure. Because Rootstown was settled by New Englanders from the Western Reserve, the earliest frame houses were built in the Late Colonial vernacular practice.
As the 19th century progressed and farming brought prosperity, the architectural styles got a little more formal. This area is known for beautiful examples of Greek Revival style. These are the homes that often feature a more substantial, temple-like facade—think stately pillars, simple but dignified moldings, and symmetrical design. These structures weren’t just functional farmhouses; they were built to reflect the prosperity and classical ideals of the era. You’ll often find them with a classic “Upright and Wing” form, a popular style in Northeast Ohio where a taller main section is flanked by a lower wing.
Today, the housing stock is a mix that tells the whole story of the township’s growth:
Historic Greek Revival and Vernacular Farmhouses: These older homes require skilled care and attention to maintain their period-specific roofing materials, often slate or wood shingle originally, but modern asphalt shingles are the most common replacement today, chosen for durability.
Mid-Century and Ranch Homes:
As the township developed, especially in the 20th century, you see the arrival of practical, post-war styles like ranch houses and split-levels, particularly as the township became more suburbanized.
What ties it all together is the setting. The houses are typically situated on larger lots, giving the entire township a beautiful, open feel that honors its agricultural past.
Living in Rootstown Today:
Rural Accessibility
So, what is it like to live in Rootstown right now? It’s a great combination of quiet, rural atmosphere with incredible accessibility. Rootstown is strategically located, with Interstate 76 running right through, making it a commuter’s dream for those working in Akron, Cleveland, or Youngstown.
The presence of the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) and its associated Bio-Med Science Academy has injected a modern, professional, and educational anchor into the community. This adds a layer of depth—you have the strong agricultural roots existing alongside a major healthcare and research institution.
Rootstown still manages to maintain a low-key, owner-occupied residential character. People choose Rootstown because they want space, good schools, and a strong sense of community. It’s the kind of place where your kids can grow up enjoying the parks and where neighbors look out for one another.
From the two-hundred-year-old tradition of Connecticut pioneers and whaling captains to the modern demands of a growing, accessible township, Rootstown has a rich story written into the landscape.
Go with the best, the most caring local roofing company
Whether you live in a stately old Greek Revival that needs a sensitive repair or a newer ranch that’s due for a standard replacement, we love working in Rootstown. You can be sure the Eagle Eye team will handle your roof with the attention to quality and history that this great community deserves!

When our contractor abandoned after not properly completing our roofing project, Eagle Eye stepped in to help. Mike did a masterful job finding a solution … More and stopping 3 leak points. When still a little water was coming in, they were out the next day to fix it. All is well now and I so appreciate their craftsmanship. -

Needed to replace a 20 year old roof. Had several companies quote the work. Carl Grant from Eagle Eye Roofing provided a fair and competitive price on … More a new roof with new soffits, fascia, gutters and downspouts. Carl followed through from start to finish even when he was out of the country on vacation. The crews who did the work were professional efficient and did a terrific job of cleaning up after themselves. We would highly recommend Eagle Eye roofing. -

We had a squirrel problem since our soffit was loose and falling down in some places. One place offered to only put some screws in but Eagle eye roofing … More did far more work for less than the first place I called was going to charge for just some screws. Mike did a great job and was super friendly. Everything looks great! Will definitely recommend to anyone I know needing repair!
