Hey everyone, the Eagle Eye Roofing team here! We spend a lot of time up on roofs, getting a bird’s eye view of Suffield and the surrounding areas. And let me tell you, there’s a lot to love about this part of Ohio. We’re not just about metal roofing or expert skylight repair and skylight installation – we’re also proud members of this awesome community. So, we thought we’d take a moment to chat about what makes living in Suffield so special.
Suffield itself is a pretty neat place, full of friendly faces and that classic small-town feel. But to really understand this area, you’ve gotta zoom out a bit and look at its neighbors, especially Sebring. Sebring has a cool history that really shaped the region, and it all started with some industrious brothers back in the late 1800s.
Sebring Brothers in Neighboring Open Land
See, before Sebring was Sebring, it was just open land. Then, in 1899, the Sebring brothers – George, Oliver, and Frank – came to town. These guys were already big in the pottery industry, and they saw potential here. They bought up a ton of land, platted out a town, and built a massive pottery factory. That’s right, Sebring was founded pretty much from scratch, all thanks to the pottery boom! They even named the streets after their family members and other important figures. It was a real “build it and they will come” situation, and people did come, drawn by the jobs and the promise of a new community. That industrial spirit is still part of the fabric of the area, even if the pottery industry isn’t what it once was.

Now, let’s talk houses! Being roofers, we get to see all kinds of homes, and it’s like a living history book up here. When Suffield was first getting started, you’d see a lot of Victorian-style homes. Think grand porches, intricate trim, and usually two stories. They were built for families and designed to impress. As time moved on, especially after the World Wars, things started to get a bit more practical and streamlined.
In the mid-20th century, you saw a lot of “ranch” style homes pop up. These are those classic single-story houses, often with an attached garage, that were all about convenience and affordability for the growing middle class. They’re still super popular today because they’re easy to get around in and offer a lot of living space on one level. We do a lot of metal roofing on these bad boys, by the way – it looks great and lasts forever!
Split-Level and Bi-Level Homes: Clever Way to get More Living Space on a Smaller Footprint
Then you had the “split-level” and “bi-level” homes, which were kind of a clever way to get more living space on a smaller footprint. They have those distinct staggered floors, offering different zones for living, sleeping, and recreation. These can be really fun to work on, especially when we’re doing a new skylight installation to bring more natural light into those interior spaces.
Today, you see a really nice mix. We still have those charming older homes that have been lovingly maintained and updated. They often have so much character! And we also see newer construction, ranging from more contemporary designs to updated takes on classic styles. People in Suffield really value comfortable, well-built homes, and that’s where we come in.
