A Glimpse into the Past
Rittman’s story goes way back. The first settlers arrived in the area in 1814, with pioneers like William Doyle and John Coleman taking title to land. Records show that William Doyle later received a presidential land grant, formally establishing his presence in 1815. For a time, the town was known by other names like Arkona, Milton Station, and New Prospect.
In 1871, the name was officially changed to Rittman to honor Fred Rittman, the treasurer of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which had just run a line through the area. The railroad was a game-changer, and Rittman grew as a hub for industry. The discovery of salt deposits in 1897 led to the founding of Wayne Salt, which eventually became the Morton Salt Company we know today. Another major employer, the Ohio Boxboard Co., was founded to package the salt and matches made nearby. These industries are part of the backbone of Rittman, and they helped shape the community into the thriving place it is today.
